Introduction to the Online Version

Translation

Bear in mind that as with the other editions of the The Bible Unpacked, the In-Depth Edition was developed using the NIV translation of the Bible. However (for the time being at least) the Bible verse links in the online version of it are to the English Standard Verson (ESV). This is because linking to the ESV Bible Online website has proved more practical for a couple of reasons and the author is hopeful of obtaining permission to change the In-Depth Edition to the ESV, so as to allow it to be downloaded for free in its entirety, with the verses printed out in full.

As such if a short quote from the passage in question appears in a comment following the passage, unless otherwise noted it will be from the NIV translation. Note that an online version linking in to NIV verses from a website may still be developed in the future.

If a link to a single verse or passage is activated (as opposed to a link to all verses in a subsection) then below it will appear the option of displaying the verse or passage in the NIV (or the NASB, NLT, NKJV or NKJV) through the Bible Gateway website.

Getting Started

As with the current printed copy, the online version of The Bible Unpacked In-Depth Edition is in two volumes – Volume I: What to Know and Volume II: What to Do.

After opening one of the two files, ensure that the bookmarks panel is displayed. This can be done in Adobe Reader by either: clicking on the Bookmarks icon  (the second icon from the top in the far left hand panel) or clicking on the View menu, then its Navigation Panels option and then Bookmarks in the sub menu.

Adust the size of the text (e.g. by typing a percentage value in the zoom percentage text/edit box on the pdf reader toolbar and pressing the Enter key).

Then go to one of the chapters (by clicking on a bookmark or scrolling down) and click on a verse link. This will open a window for your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) with a verse from the ESV Bible Online website. Now adjust the size and position of the two windows, as per the example on the following page.

(To do this, ensure that the two windows are not maximized. Then move them one at a time by clicking and holding down the mouse on the blue title bar and then dragging with the mouse. Resize by pointing the mouse to a border of a window so that the mouse pointer becomes a double arrow; then click and hold down the mouse, and drag the border.)

Tips for Using the Online Version

It is often helpful to display the chapters listed in the Bookmarks panel without all of their sections as well. To do this, click on the Options button  at the top left of the Bookmarks panel; then click the Collapse Top-Level Bookmarks option. Then to see the sections in just one particular chapter, click the “+” symbol to the left of the chapter name. Only the sections of that chapter will be displayed and its “+” symbol will become a “–” symbol. Subsequently clicking on the “–” symbol will collapse or hide the chapter’s sections.

If you click on a link in the pdf document to go to another part of the document, you can return to the link by holding down one of the Alt keys and pressing the left arrow. In fact, with the Alt key held down, you can keep on pressing the left arrow to move back through previous links that you had clicked. You can then go forward through the links by holding down one of the Alt keys and pressing the right arrow.

The cross references to headings in the other volume are not hyperlinks. One simple way of accessing them is to have the pdf file of the other volume open and type the page number in its page number edit box (on the Page Navigation toolbar) and press the Enter key.
