The Bible Unpacked™

Using the PDF Electronic Version

This PDF file combines The Bible Unpacked In-Depth Edition, Volume I: What to Know and The Bible Unpacked In-Depth Edition, Volume II: What to Do. After downloading it, save it to your computer and then use the saved copy.

The following speaks of features that will help the user navigate this file efficiently when using Adobe Reader X (the most common program for reading PDF files). It can be downloaded for free. Note that this file may not display correctly if it is opened in Preview, an Apple program.

Bookmarks  Adobe bookmark icon

Adobe Reader X will usually display a Bookmark icon (displayed above) on the left side. Clicking on it will open the Navigation Pane and show the first level of bookmarks, based on the document‘s headings. There will be a plus (+) sign next to some bookmarks. Clicking on a plus sign will expand a bookmark, showing the next level of bookmarks (and the corresponding headings).

Clicking on a bookmark will navigate to and display the corresponding heading in the document.

When bookmarks are displayed in the Navigation Pane, the Options button will appear immediately to the right of the bookmarks button. Clicking the Options button will give users the options to do such things as:

Moving the mouse pointer to the boundary of the Navigation Pane will change the mouse pointer to a double arrow. Then the user can click and drag the boundary, to increase or decrease the width of the Navigation Pane.

Hyperlinks

In the file, the text in a dark blue color indicates a hyperlink. Addionally, all headings in the text are also hyperlinks, irrespective of their color.

Clicking on a hyperlink will navigate to the heading or verse indicated. If using Adobe Reader, to ensure that the heading or verse will always be displayed at the top of the screen (in one of a page's two columns), from the View menu select Page Display and then Single Page Continuous.

Note that a hyperlink to a verse that is not the first verse in a passage will result in the beginning of the verse itself being displayed at the top of the screen, not the beginning of the passage that contains the verse. As such the verse will be identifiable by its number, in superscript.

After following a hyperlink, to return to the hyperlink either click Previous View (a button with a white arrow inside a circle) on the toolbar or use the keyboard shortcut Alt + (i.e. hold down the Alt key and press the left arrow key). The corresponding keyboard shortcut on an Apple computer is Command + .

However this will not work if the hyperlink takes the user to a destination on the same page. Clicking the Previous View button or using Alt + will actually take the user back to an earlier location, which may not be on the same page. In such a case it would be better to scroll back to the desired location (eg. back to the hyperlink that was clicked).

Note that if clicking the Previous View button or using Alt + takes the user to an unwanted location, clicking the Next View button or using Alt + can be used to return. For these options take the user forward to where the last clicked hyperlink took them. If the Previous View or Next View buttons are not displayed, to display them click on the menu options shown in the picture below.

From the View menu click Show/Hide, then Toolbar Items, then Page Navigation, then Previous View.

Hyperlinked Headings

Headings in the main contents and in the contents at the beginning of each chapter are in different colors but are also hyperlinks. These link to the corresponding headings in the text.

Following the Bibliography, there are two lists of headings called Major Headings and Subheadings. The first contains the major headings in each chapter and the second contains all headings including every subheading. All the headings in these lists are hyperlinks to the corresponding headings in the text. Additionally, in the Major Headings list each major heading has an arrow adjacent to it, which is a hyperlink to the corresponding major heading in the Subheadings list. This enables users to survey the main structure of the chapters (in the Major Headings list) and then to quickly see the subheadings under any major heading and chapter (in the Subheadings list).

Also in the Subheadings list there is an arrow adjacent to each chapter heading, which is a hyperlink to the corresponding chapter heading in the Major Headings list. This is to allow users browsing the Subheadings list to have quick access to the Major Headings list.

All the headings in the text (irrespective of their color) are also hyperlinks to the corresponding headings in the Subheadings list. This allows users to quickly view the subheadings within a chapter, enabling them to see what headings lie ahead or to see the context of a subheading that they have arrived at by clicking on a cross-reference hyperlink.

The extensive use of hyperlinks enables users reading this document on a smaller screen to efficiently navigate the document without needing to rely on bookmarks. As such they do not need to have the Navigation Pane open, taking up space on their screens.

Note that the Scripture Index and the Subject Index also contain hyperlinks to the verses and topics listed.

Hyperlinks to the ESV Bible Website

With internet access, click on a verse‘s book name or chapter (before the colon preceding the verse number) to see the whole of the chapter that it is in on the ESV Bible website. (If your web browser is not already open, allow a few extra seconds for the website to appear.) Users who have access to the ESV Study Bible website can contact this website for a copy of the Electronic Version with links to the ESV Study Bible website.

If you get a security warning asking whether to allow access to the website, check Remember my action for this site and then click Allow. If you are using Adobe Reader and it will not allow you access, click the Edit menu (Windows) or the Reader menu (Mac OS), and then click Preferences. In the subsequent dialog box, click Trust Manager on the left and then click the Change Settings button. This will open a dialog box that will enable you to allow access to the website.

The author of The Bible Unpacked would like users to note the generosity of the publishers of the ESV in allowing such a large number of verses from the ESV to be used in this In-Depth Edition.
